risks to humanity and the environment

During a test flight on Thursday, January 16, the second stage of SpaceX’s Starship rocket exploded, sending debris into Earth’s atmosphere. These fiery fragments, visible in the sky of certain countries, particularly those in the Caribbean, raise concerns about the potential consequences for the population and the environment.

Port-au-Prince, January 17, 2025 – The accident, which occurred as part of Elon Musk’s ambitious space projects, could have serious repercussions. Debris, depending on its size, weight and location of impact, is likely to cause significant material damage, destroying buildings, infrastructure or vehicles. If fragments reach populated areas, they could cause loss of life or serious injury.

Furthermore, this debris represents a threat to public health. Some of them would contain toxic substances released during the explosion, while others, particularly those equipped with fuel tanks, could start fires when they hit the ground. These events, combined with the unpredictability of impacts, could fuel fear and trauma among affected populations.

Space agencies, such as NASA and SpaceX, carefully monitor the trajectory of debris to reduce risks. However, after an unexpected explosion, controlling all the fragments proves almost impossible.
