The Scottish football community is in mourning after the loss of Hall of Famer and sporting icon Denis Law, who passed away at the age of 84 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
In an emotional statement, the Law family shared their grief: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our father, Denis Law, has sadly passed away. He fought a hard battle, but now he is at peace. ”
They also wanted to express their gratitude to everyone who supported his wellbeing during this difficult time, saying: “We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, both in the past only recently. We know how many people have supported and loved him, and that love has always been appreciated and made a difference. Thank you.
Denis Law, who played for Scotland 55 times, remains the nation’s all-time top scorer with 30 goals. His extraordinary talent was recognized worldwide in 1964 when he won the Ballon d’Or, becoming the only Scottish player to receive this prestigious honour.

His journey also took him to Italy, where he played for Torino for a year, but it was at Manchester United that he became a legendary figure. During his 11 years with the club, Law scored an impressive total of 237 goals, cementing his status as one of football’s great strikers.

He finished his career at Manchester City, but his legacy as King of the Stretford End will never be forgotten. Following his death, Manchester United released a moving tribute, saying: “Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law. Our deepest condolences to Denis’ family and his many friends. His memory will live on forever.”
In August 2021, Law bravely announced his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia, sharing thoughts on the struggles he faced. “This will not be an easy journey, especially for the people who love you most. I recognize that the path ahead will be difficult and painful, and I ask for understanding and patience as I navigate this difficult path. I realize how my brain is deteriorating and I want to address my condition while I can, because I understand there will come days when I can’t.”
