Twenty years in prison for two men after the death of an octogenarian in a burglary

The two co-defendants were on trial for “robbery with violence resulting in death without intention of causing it”. They entered the home of an 83-year-old woman in Xirocourt, in Meurthe-et-, on the night of January 16 to 17, 2020. The latter was discovered injured and died ten days later.

Tried for “robbery with violence resulting in death without intention to cause it”, throughout their trial “the two co-accused accused each other” of the crime with which they are accused, noted the attorney general Philippe Renzi, who had required 27 years of imprisonment for each of the two accused.

The events took place on the night of January 16 to 17, 2020. “That evening, Mauricette, an 83-year-old lady, was sleeping peacefully at home, in this somewhat empty and isolated house, with closed shutters. this is not a sign that the house is unoccupied,” stressed the attorney general. But the two accused came to disturb the calm reigning in the home. The “thieves” entered the house, “both went upstairs. And then?” he asks.

Everyone blames each other for the violence. In his requisitions, Philippe Renzi estimated that the two brothers-in-law “did not want the death of this old lady (…) The death of Mauricette is only the tragic consequence of their theft”. Discovered injured at home, Mauricette died ten days later. The violence led to the death of the octogenarian but “for them these are the risks of the profession”, underlines Philippe Renzi. “It’s a hazard.”

The magistrate also described the accused as “two violent individuals for whom theft is deeply rooted.” They did it again, in April 2020, in the west of , by robbing a nonagenarian who they also killed: same crime, same motive, same modus operandi. For these facts, they were sentenced last month on appeal in to 25 years of imprisonment for Moïse Weiss and 20 years of imprisonment for Yohan Bodin.
