I learned of David Lynch’s disappearance on Thursday, January 16, an hour after searching, unsuccessfully as always, for his home and studio on Senalda Drive in lower Outpost Canyon to take a photo and send it to photographer Richard Dumas, assured him that everything was still standing. Although I have often gone up the street, either for an interview or to take visitors there, I get lost every time; I miss the turn, climb too high, and always come across Gore Vidal’s old house, a sign that I have gone irremediably wrong. Richard Dumas and I have a long history, much of which involves David Lynch. After this pilgrimage as unexpected as it was failed, I realize today that mine with David Lynch passes through the places of this city which we thought was engulfed by flames just a few days ago. Lynch was evacuated at the start of the fires but did not survive the emphysema which had more or less confined him to his home in recent times.

In the spring of 2001, I served as a driver for Dumas who came to do a photo report on the Mulholland Drive filming locations. I was paid for this role
