Honeydrip, a Montrealer, and a whole community, at Igloofest

It was shaping up to be a prolific week for Honeydrip when Duty was able to chat with her early Sunday evening. A few days before her performance at Igloofest, scheduled for Friday, January 17 under the Homegrown Harvest banner alongside Marie Davidson and Dileta, the well-known DJ and producer of the Montreal underground scene is working on setting up a collective of women and queer people — “because there aren’t enough of them in this culture!” » — whose objective is to build speakers and stereo systems. “We are starting to divide roles, to talk about ideas, to form all that,” confides enthusiastically the one who masters the subject like the back of her hand, with her studies in electroacoustics and the making of her own subwoofers in 2023, with the invaluable help of artists Émilie Godin and Sako.

It seems that the very young 2025 is already on a good roll. “I hope to experience a year like 2024 again, the biggest year for my career,” Honeydrip hopes. After releasing his album Psychotropical at the end of 2023, it was indeed able to present its first live setwho “brought her to many countries”. Back on her land, she wants to take advantage of the low tide to concentrate both on her projects and on creation. And, meanwhile, Igloofest time is fast approaching.

“I don’t plan my sets », Warns the DJ, who has a good ten years of experience. Because understanding a new audience is an eternal challenge, the artist favors intuition and letting go in a unique approach. “It doesn’t happen to me all the time, but my favorite thing is to go into a trance while mixing. If it’s planned, I’m not able to do it, so it’s really something that has to be ephemeral and in real time,” she confides. “I usually just pick a tune to start with and then I know my library well enough to know which ones work and which ones don’t. » Before each setthe same ritual. “I download a lot of new music and it also allows me to try a lot of things,” says Honeydrip.

For the DJ and producer, participating in one of the biggest festivals of its kind in Montreal is always an honor. “When we get this far, it’s a bit like a milestone in our career: things are real,” says Honeydrip, on the eve of his second visit to Igloofest. “I know they put a lot of effort into trying to represent all the sounds that are in Montreal and I’m happy to be able to embody the spectrum bass music with Dileta and Apashe,” she explains.

Seven years after his first time, Honeydrip also enjoys recalling his memories. At the time, she was expected on the main stage as the opening act for Petit Biscuit. “It’s the biggest show that I’ve played to date and as the evening progressed I could see the crowd filling up, up to 10,000 people I think. I felt really confident, because at first it was just the sound techs and the employees, and all of a sudden people were singing my name. » A very special moment for her.

The singularity of the Igloofest moment did not stop on January 19, 2018 for the Montrealer. This event then turned into opportunities, since, noticed by a programmer, she began to be courted by Mutek and Piknic Électronik, in particular. “There is a real relationship that has been built and she believes in me,” explains Honeydrip, today comfortable enough to try out increasingly experimental music despite the mainstream label of these festivals.

“They try to choose collectives that represent several kinds of sounds or people,” she emphasizes. Honeydrip is delighted every time she takes part in these festivals because of the platform they offer her. “We all have different things to offer and those who are not used to hearing these kinds of music, maybe they will discover something that will change their lives and make them want to follow our communities,” continues the DJ and producer. In the meantime, she dreams of her future collective. If there were around fifteen at their last meeting, all people wishing to join his stereo initiative are welcome. “It would be really great to be able to continue recruiting,” says Honeydrip.
