It was 2017! Celta de Vigo struck a major blow by eliminating Real Madrid from the Copa del Rey in the quarter-finals. A feat which deprived Zinédine Zidane’s men of the possibility of achieving a historic treble that season. As pointed out ASeight years later, this elimination remains a bitter memory for the Madrid club, which remembers the humiliation suffered that night.
Celta has long suffered from the “fear of the Bernabéu”, having not won a match at the Santiago Bernabéu since 2006 in La Liga. However, this last clash against Real in the Copa del Rey, on January 18, 2017, is remembered as a moment of glory for the Galicians. In the first leg, Eduardo Berizzo’s men won at Chamartín 1-2 thanks to goals from Iago Aspas and Jonny Otto, while Marcelo scored Madrid’s only goal.
This result caused real euphoria in Vigo, and the return meeting in Balaídos quickly transformed into a real theater of emotions. Before the break, an own goal from Danilo gave Celta a comfortable lead (1-0). However, Real Madrid did not give up.
Cristiano Ronaldo reduced the gap with a masterful free kick. Five minutes from time, Daniel Wass restored the advantage to the Galicians (2-1), before Lucas Vázquez, in the last seconds, equalized for the Madrilenians (2-2). But it was already too late. The first leg, favorable to Berizzo’s men, had already offered the Galicians the decisive advantage.
See you this evening to see if the Galicians will be able to pull off another bad trick at Real Madrid…
