Russia ready to help Vietnam revive nuclear industry

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin announced during his meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart, Pham Minh Chinh, that Russia is ready to share its expertise to develop the nuclear industry in Vietnam. This project, crucial to guaranteeing the country’s energy security and achieving the objective of carbon neutrality by 2050, is part of the relaunch of the nuclear program in Ninh Thuan, suspended since 2016.

Vietnam’s energy future

The decision of the Vietnamese National Assembly, in November 2024, to relaunch this project after eight years of suspension marks a turning point in the country’s energy policy. According to a recent directive, this revival should be finalized within five years, a challenge that Russia says it is ready to take on with Vietnam.

Beyond energy, the two leaders emphasized areas of cooperation such as health, pharmaceuticals and training. Russia also reiterated its role as a key partner for Vietnam in strategic bilateral collaboration.

Strengthening historical and economic ties

Mikhail Mishustin’s visit comes a few months after that of President Vladimir Putin, underscoring the importance Russia attaches to its relationship with Vietnam. Discussions between the two Prime Ministers focused on initiatives aimed at increasing bilateral trade, which reached $4.57 billion in 2024, thanks in particular to the free trade agreement between Vietnam and the Economic Union Eurasian.

The two sides also discussed international issues, including maritime security in the South China Sea, and signed several bilateral agreements in the fields of science, culture and communications. At the same time, Russian investment projects in Vietnam, focused on oil, gas and manufacturing, continue to expand.

With a diplomatic history dating back to 1950 and a friendship strengthened by strategic agreements, the Vietnam-Russia relationship continues to develop. This official visit illustrates the desire of the two nations to continue on this path to meet the challenges of tomorrow together.
