Ukrainian Drone Attacks: Fires on Russian Strategic Sites

Ukrainian drones struck several industrial and energy sites in Russia on Tuesday morning, causing fires in Tatarstan and the Saratov region. These attacks are part of a series of operations carried out by kyiv to weaken Moscow’s logistical and industrial capabilities.

On the outskirts of Kazan, capital of Tatarstan, a gas tank caught fire following a drone attack, according to the local government. Although the incident caused a plume of black smoke visible for miles, no casualties were reported. The regional leader, Rustam Minnikhanov, visited the site to assess the situation. Local sources indicate that the attack targeted a liquefied gas depot located near a chemical factory.

Impact in the Saratov region

The Saratov region, located 700 kilometers southeast of Moscow, was also affected. Two industrial companies suffered damage following what authorities described as a “massive drone attack.” A fire was reported at a company in Engels, while another facility, located in the city of Saratov, was also impacted. For safety reasons, schools in the region have temporarily opted for distance learning.

Criticisms of the Russian Anti-Aircraft System

Andriï Kovalenko, Ukrainian head of the fight against disinformation, joked about the effectiveness of the Russian air defense system. According to him, the targeted infrastructure, including refineries, oil depots and factories producing military components, is essential to the Russian war effort.

Kazan was specifically mentioned for damage to the Orgsintez factory, a key chemical company for manufacturing components used in armored vehicles and weapons.

Escalation of Tensions and Repercussions

The recent attacks reflect an intensification of clashes between kyiv and Moscow, as each side seeks to consolidate its positions. In this context, the Ukrainian Air Force claimed to have neutralized 58 Russian drones in the last 24 hours, while others were intercepted by jamming or crashed.

These incidents occur as Russian forces advance in eastern Ukraine, consolidating their hold on several strategic areas, including the town of Kurakhové.

At the same time, Boris Pistorius, German Defense Minister, visited kyiv to discuss continued military aid. Germany, the second largest military contributor to Ukraine after the United States, faces internal debates over the extent of its support, particularly in the run-up to parliamentary elections scheduled for February.
