MOVIE THEATER – Emilia Perez in the footsteps ofAnatomy of a fall ? The latest feature film by Jacques Audiard, recently crowned with several awards at the Golden Globes, once again won a series of nominations this Tuesday, January 15 with a view to another award ceremony: the Bafta, which is to be held on the 16 February in London.
The musical starring Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón and Selena Gomez garnered 11 nominations. However, it is one less than Conclave. The papal thriller with Ralph Fiennes flies over the final selection. The Brutalista film in which Adrien Brody plays an architect who survived the Holocaust, came third.
Last year, Justine Triet’s film, nominated in seven categories, walked away with a prize, that of best original screenplay. It is Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan who won most of the awards, seven to be precise.
A taste of the Oscars
This Wednesday’s nominations give a trend before those of the Oscars, and confirm the favorite status ofEmilia Perezalready a big winner at the Golden Globes where he won four awards in early January.
This musical fresco on the gender transition of a Mexican drug trafficker, awarded at Cannes and broadcast on Netflix in the United States, is notably nominated in the best film category, best foreign language film, best director for Jacques Audiard and best actress for Karla Sofia Gascon.
Conclave, which tells of the power games during the election of a new pope, is also nominated in the best film category, best director for Edward Berger, big winner of the Bafta two years ago with his adaptation ofIn the West, nothing newand best actor for the British Ralph Fiennes.
Anora, The Substance…
Anorawhich won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, is nominated seven times, like the musical Wicked. Frenchwoman Coralie Fargeat is the only woman nominated in the best director category for her gore fable The Substancealso with Denis Villeneuve (Dune II), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist) et Sean Baker (Anora).
Demi Moore, who won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of a former Hollywood celebrity addicted to a youth serum in The Substanceis nominated in the best actress category.
For his part, Kneecap, docu-fiction about a cheeky Northern Irish trio who rap in Gaelic, continues to enjoy unexpected success and garners six nominations in the categories of best British film, casting and original screenplay.
The Bafta ceremony generally gives a foretaste of the Oscars, awarded two weeks later in Los Angeles, a city still in the grip of devastating fires. The televised announcement of the nominations, postponed twice, will take place online on January 23. The gala evening scheduled for March 2 is for the moment maintained, while the Critics Choice Awards ceremony, which was to be held this Sunday, had to be postponed.
