What is Blue Origin’s mission?

This involves taking off for the very first time New Glenn, the new heavy launcher from Blue Origin, a company founded twenty-five years ago by Jeff Bezos, the former boss and creator of Amazon. The name of the launcher alludes to John Glenn, hero of the American conquest of space, the first American to make an orbital flight.

New Glenn will break free from Earth’s gravity at the Cape Canaveral Launch Station, Florida. This will be a demonstration firing, with a payload on board which will be deployed in orbit around the Earth. This will also be an opportunity to test the automatic return of the first stage on an ocean platform, off the American coast.

« We want to be clear about our objectives. This is our first flight and we have prepared rigorously for it. […]. Our main goal is to reach orbit safely. Anything beyond that is just icing on the cake », the company wrote a few days ago. In short, failures could occur.

The return from the first floor is a particularly sensitive stage. Blue Origin admits: “ We know it is ambitious to land the booster on our first attempt off the Atlantic […]. No matter what happens, we will learn, refine, and apply this knowledge in our next launch. »

In many ways, New Glenn and Starship are similar rockets. Of a relatively equivalent size (nearly 100 meters for the first, around 120 for the second), in the category of “heavy”, not to say “super heavy” launchers, they are also intended to be reusable – as well the first than the second.

When does the New Glenn rocket take off?

Takeoff is scheduled for January 16, at 7 a.m. metropolitan time.
