Retegui in the spotlight: Goal against Juventus

Mateo Retegui strikes again. After missing two Serie A matches due to a muscle injury, he made his return for Atalanta against Calcio giants Juventus and his impact was crucial: Former Boca striker Tigre and Talleres scored a goal with a well-balanced header, following a cross from Raoul Bellanova, equalizing the match at 1-1 for the Bergamo team.

Coach Gian Piero Gasperini was full of praise for the Italian-Argentinian striker: “He occupies the area better than anyone. Today he scored another important goal. His presence brings us much more value because it allows us to change our approach. Today it was decisive.”

Retegui’s return took on even greater significance given that he did not start the match due to his recent injury. He came on in the 65th minute, replacing Charles De Ketelaere, with Juventus already leading 1-0 thanks to a shot from defender Kalulu, who was a key player during the match.

Currently, Mateo is the top scorer in Serie A, with 13 goals in 18 appearances, and he has also provided two assists. His exceptional form is likely to keep him as a mainstay of Luciano Spalletti’s Italy national team until 2025. Just behind him in the goalscoring charts is Inter’s Marcus Thuram, with 12 goals .

The left-footed striker was part of Thiago Motta’s starting XI (with Alexandre Hugeux on the bench due to suspension) and played until the 81st minute. He also had a notable strike towards goal from outside the box, showing significant participation throughout the match. “We are not in crisis; today we attacked and fought, and we hope to continue like this until the end of the season,” he said.
