The rains combined with the snow of the last few days lead to striking floods in the Oise! After a first rather impressive phenomenon in Beauvaisis last week, it is now the north-east of the department which is concerned, more precisely between Compiègne and Noyon.

The Oise river has notably overflowed its bed at several points, such as in the fields between Ribécourt-Dreslincourt and Bailly, or at Montmacq.

The Oise has risen by more than 1.50 m

In this village of less than 1,200 souls, multiple gardens of houses run along the river, the edges of which have recently been deforested in preparation for the Seine- Europe canal construction site.

And Weather had announced “overflows” of the middle Oise north of Compiègne, here, the water rose several tens of centimeters to even flood several gardens.

According to Vigicruesthe Oise has risen up to 2.95 m at the station Plessis-Brionneighboring village of Montmacq, at 2 p.m. this Tuesday January 14, 2025. Last Friday, its level was less than 1.50 m. In just a few days, his level doubled!

“We’re all used to it”

But in Montmacq, we are not really surprised… Or even worried. “We have always had floods! I’m used to these floods for fifty years,” laughs a 56-year-old resident, whose sloping garden has been largely flooded by the Oise for several days.

Last night, the water level rose again by about 6 cm in my garden. But I never had water in the house. We’re all used to it here.

A resident of Montmacq

“I just went down to my cellar and I don’t even have any water in it,” he reassures himself.

“When I saw the water starting to rise this weekend, I quickly moved my car. Because I’ve already been fooled once by leaving it parked in front of my house on a flood day. I had at least 20 cm of water inside! »

A few steps away, at the village bar-tabac, another resident says he is confronted with the flooding of the Oise “every year”. “Luckily, the water never came into the house, but in the garden it did!” Today, I have it at least up to my pelvis.”

“But I believe that the Oise has reached its maximum. It should start to go down,” he analyzes.

Record floods in 1993 in Montmacq

Everyone in Montmacq still has in mind the record floods suffered in the 1990s. Between 1993 and 1995the Oise had even more widely overflowed its bed before taking possession of streets and homes.

Flood gates and a lifting station including two 400 m pumps3/h were then installed to avoid reliving such an episode. Despite this, the risk of flooding remains constantly present in Montmacq.

A sector eaten away by water

In neighboring towns, also bordering the Oise, the river has also regained its rights. Like here at Pimprez.

Between Compiégnois and Noyonnais, certain roads were flooded, then closed to traffic because they had become impassable.

It’s not about several ponds or even the summer landscapes of the Camargue, but about the overflowing Oise! However, the decline should begin this Wednesday, January 15.
