The skipper cut the line in polar cold but under a beautiful moon and the magnificent lights of dawn, also lit by the cloud of boats that accompanied him. He only raised his arms for the first time a few minutes before crossing the line.
Aboard his 18-meter monohull, Charlie Dalin won a fierce race against Yoann Richomme (Paprec-Arkéa) and Sébastien Simon (Groupe Dubreuil), who should finish second and third.
First on the line during the last edition four years ago, Dalin was beaten by Rochelais Yannick Bestaven, once the bonuses received by Bestaven for his participation in the rescue of Kévin Escoffier were added. Dalin crossed the line well and won the event this time, for his second Vendée Globe participation.
The skipper took the lead at the Cape of Good Hope at the tip of Africa, at Cape Leeuwin (Australia) then at the equator, as he sailed up the Atlantic. Richomme was ahead of him at Cape Horn, by only 9 minutes 30 seconds.
