According to consistent, reliable information, a Spanish tourist was kidnapped in southern Algeria this Wednesday, January 15, 2025. The kidnappers are believed to be affiliated with the Islamic State in the Great Sahara (#EIGS). They freed the people who were with the Spaniard at the time of her kidnapping at the Algerian border before entering Malian territory, with the only hostage.

This umpteenth kidnapping comes after an Austrian national, Eva Grezmatcher, was kidnapped recently in Agadez, Niger. She, too, would have been captured by the EIGS.

This group, which is distinguished by its violence, is now particularly active in the regions of Tahoua and Agadez where it shines through numerous attacks.

Meanwhile, the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM), once notorious for kidnapping Western citizens, appears to have changed its tune. He no longer seems to favor the kidnapping of foreign nationals who are no doubt tempted by other means of action.

Faced with the increase in insecurity in the Sahelian regions, foreigners are called upon to exercise greater vigilance and avoid traveling to high-risk areas until further notice.
