LIVE – General policy speech: “The indexation of pensions for all retirees is now guaranteed,” says Jean-Philippe Tanguy

François Bayrou relies on the left, and particularly the socialists, to avoid censorship

The equation remains as delicate as ever for the Prime Minister, engaged in negotiations with the non-Melenchonist left, without however antagonizing his allies, the Republicans and even Macronists, who are raising their voices in the face of a possible rollback on pensions.

While his predecessor Michel Barnier had tried in vain to obtain non-censorship of the far right, by acceding to several of the demands of the National Rally, François Bayrou is this time banking on the left and particularly the socialists to find a way of passage. Without the votes of the socialists, Insoumise and the RN cannot overthrow the government.

All day Monday, the executive increased talks. “They look like they’re struggling, but in the end it’s thin”summarized to AFP the boss of environmentalists Marine Tondelier, who spoke by telephone with Éric Lombard (Economy), Catherine Vautrin (Labor and Health) and Amélie de Montchalin (Public Accounts). “I still don’t have too many arguments for not voting for censure”she added.

The leaders of the communists, including Fabien Roussel, also spoke with Éric Lombard. But it was the socialists who animated the day, with a two-hour meeting Monday evening in Matignon which ended in failure. “As I speak to you, the proposals that are on the table are not acceptable to the Socialist Party and we regret that”argued party secretary general Pierre Jouvet.

Enough to throw the PS into the arms of censorship, since a motion will undoubtedly be tabled by the Insoumis on Tuesday, in the wake of a general policy declaration.

If, due to lack of support from the National Rally for the LFI text, the government should not fall immediately, Mr. Bayrou’s inability to rally the PS casts doubt on the sustainability of this government which could, like its predecessor, come up against the wall of voting on the budget currently being negotiated.
