At CES 2025, the Chinese manufacturer of electric two-wheelers Yadea announced the arrival of a first range of electric scooters equipped with sodium-ion batteries, all at very affordable prices.
Already widely discussed in the world of electric cars, sodium-ion batteries are making a place for themselves in the electric scooter market. Considered one of the largest manufacturers in the world, Yadea is one of the first to draw. During CES in Las Vegas, the Chinese giant formalized the arrival of a first offering consisting of four models.
A promising alternative to lithium
In its press release, Yadea recalls the numerous advantages of sodium-ion batteries, compared to lithium batteries currently mainly used in electric scooters. While their energy density is lower than lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries are both safer and more environmentally friendly. They also offer higher load capacities. According to Yadea, users can recharge their battery to 80% in just 15 minutes.
In addition to these performances, Yadea highlights the abundance of resources necessary for the manufacture of sodium-ion batteries, in comparison with lithium, whose reserves are limited.
Very competitive prices
With an energy capacity of 145 Wh/kg, Yadea’s new sodium batteries have a lifespan of 1,500 cycles, or 5 years on average. These new batteries will equip four models marketed by the brand, mainly in urban formats. In terms of prices, the price varies from 3,299 to 4,299 yuan for the Chinese market, or 435 to 565 euros, depending on current exchange rates. If the full characteristics of the four models are not specified, the Yadea site announces a 1.1 kWh battery for the Q50, sold for 4,299 yuan.
For the moment, Yadea does not provide information on the arrival of these new batteries on the range of electric scooters that it markets in Europe. We imagine that the manufacturer wants to play it safe by testing its new technology on its domestic market before deploying it on a larger scale.
Also from “ battery swap«
Beyond these new sodium batteries, Yadea has also lifted the veil on its new ecosystem dedicated to fast charging. Named “ Huayu JiNa Supercharging Ecosystem ”, this is based on a network of stations with an approach similar to that of Tesla superchargers. For the moment, the manufacturer is not going into detail about the deployment phase, which should logically start with China.
