The commune of Avensan recently benefited from a work campaign aimed at maintaining its waterways and reducing the risks linked to recent floods. These interventions, finalized between the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025, are part of an action plan carried out by the Joint Union of the Jalle de Castelnau and Cartillon watersheds, under the presidency of Claude Ganelon.
Essential work
Entrusted to the Antonio Ferreira company, based in Bégadan, this initiative concerned two priority sectors: a 465-meter portion of the Jalle de Castelnau arm, between the Taste au Pont Barreau mills and that of Romefort, as well as a 865 meter section of the Ayguebelle stream.
The operations mainly consisted of cleaning the bottoms of the watercourses and pruning the vegetation from the banks. The main objective: to guarantee better water flow, limit natural obstructions, reduce deposits which can aggravate flooding while preserving aquatic biodiversity and the natural balance of local ecosystems.
Residents at the heart of prevention
If this work was financed and organized by the Union, the owners are not exempt from responsibilities. They have, in fact, the obligation to maintain the watercourses located on their plots, in accordance with the regulations in force (environmental code). This includes regular actions such as pruning, mowing or removing floating debris that could disrupt the natural flow of water.
This initiative completes a collective effort to preserve the environment and limit the risk of flooding. The Joint Watershed Union takes charge of interventions on public land, but the active participation of local residents is essential to guarantee the long-term effectiveness of these measures. This therefore encourages residents to get involved in this process by seeking advice or assistance if necessary.
