Threats of annexation of Greenland by Donald Trump: what is the status of this Danish territory?

Donald Trump arouses controversy by evoking the annexation of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, rich in strategic resources, the majority of whose inhabitants categorically refuse any idea of sale or attachment to the United States.

Every day, his shattering declaration. Since the start of the week, Donald Trump has multiplied the outings, each more worrying than the last: takeover of the Panama Canal, annexation of Canada and even Greenland. Donald Trump will not become President of the United States again until January 20, but he is already making European leaders jump, who take a very dim view of these declarations.

The threat of annexation of Greenland particularly displeases Denmark. Donald Trump said, from his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida while his son finished his visit to Nuuk: “We don’t even know if Denmark has legal rights to it, but if it does, it should give them up, because we need them for national security reasons.

What is it really? Has Greenland always been part of Denmark? No, that wasn’t always the case.

Greenland was colonized during the Viking era by Norwegian sailors, notably the famous Erik the Red, then by the Danes around 300 years ago. It became an overseas county of Denmark in 1953 and in 1979 it gained autonomy.

Since then, Greenland has had its flag, its language and its institutions, but justice, monetary, foreign, defense and security policy still depend on Copenhagen.

On the Greenland side, a majority of the population wants independence. So, when in 2019 (already) Donald Trump tried to buy the island, it was a categorical no.

5 years later, here he is again, much more combative since he does not exclude the use of force. The head of the Greenlandic government responded on Facebook: “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and never will be“. “No thanks“, said the MP who represents Greenland in the Danish Parliament. “Incredible that some people can be so naive as to think that our happiness is achieved by becoming American citizens.“, she added, refusing to “to be a pawn in Trump’s burning dreams of expanding his empire“.

The Danish Prime Minister clarified that Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders.

Important detail, since 2009, it is up to them to decide on the use of what is in their soil, which we know is full of essential raw materials and rare earths.
