The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled a substantial increase in financial reward for the much-anticipated African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024. The prestigious tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, is planned from February 1 to 28, 2025.
In an official announcement, CAF revealed that the winner of the tournament will now receive an impressive USD 3.5 million (approximately Tsh 8.68 billion). This figure represents a remarkable 75% increase from the previous price of USD 2 million (approximately Tsh 4.96 billion).
This trend of increasing stakes has been evident in recent CHAN tournaments. For example, Cameroon, winner of the 2020 edition, left with 1.25 million USD (approximately 2.88 billion Tsh).
The total prize money for the 2024 edition jumped to an impressive USD 10.4 million (approximately Tsh 25.79 billion), representing a robust 32% increase from the last tournament.

“We are excited for the upcoming TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) which will be hosted in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in 2024. We have significantly increased the winner’s prize to USD 3.5 million, an increase of 75% compared to the previous one,” declared Patrice Motsepe, president of CAF.
-“The total prize money for CHAN 2024 reached USD 10.4 million, representing an increase of 32%. This demonstrates our commitment to the tournament,” he added.
Motsepe also highlighted the vital role of CHAN in the advancement of African football and the promotion of local talents. “This competition is crucial for the development of African-based players and young talents. It will increase the global competitiveness of African football, while giving a significant boost to CAF competitions,” he said.

“The tournament is part of our strategic initiative to invest in African football, making it more attractive to fans, broadcasters, sponsors, partners and other stakeholders across Africa and beyond,” Motsepe added emphatically.
CHAN 2024 is expected to feature 19 teams, with 17 nations having already qualified. The final two places will be determined after the conclusion of the next qualifying matches.
