Arne Slot disappointed by Bergvall’s late goal after red card drama

In a dramatic turn in the final minutes of the match, Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall narrowly escaped a second yellow card for a reckless tackle on Kostas Tsimikas, as Liverpool launched a counter-attack in the 84th minute. The overheated atmosphere left Liverpool manager Arne Slot and his players visibly frustrated.

The Reds’ mood deteriorated further two minutes later when Bergvall found the net with a magnificent strike, taking advantage of a pass from Dominic Solanke. The late goal gave a battle-tested Spurs side a crucial 1-0 victory, setting the tone for a tense return to Anfield next month.

Reflecting on that decisive moment, Slot said: “When he didn’t show the second yellow card, we didn’t know it would have such a significant impact just 30 seconds later. I believe the referee was perhaps- being himself questioning his decision, which certainly wasn’t ideal for him either. I’m sure he feels the weight of this moment, although I can’t presume on his thoughts. “

Slot did not hesitate to praise the quality of Bergvall’s goal, recognizing the beautiful movement that set it up. “It was a creditable goal. The ball was well placed behind the defence, followed by a precise cross, and Bergvall kept his cool to finish. But, of course, it is the incident just before that which concerns us thoughts.”

Slot also took a moment to discuss Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou, who expressed his frustration following his side’s recent 2-1 defeat to Newcastle, where a controversial Joelinton handball indirectly contributed to an Anthony goal Gordon.

“I noticed that Ange looked quite unhappy with the decisions made in this match. Some say that decisions tend to even out as the season goes on, but I disagree. Luck or “Misfortune in refereeing decisions can often define a team’s destiny over time. Today we certainly felt the pinch of bad luck after a lucky call against us last weekend.”

The match marked only the second defeat for Slot since taking the reins from Jurgen Klopp in the summer. He acknowledged the daunting task facing Liverpool in the second leg on February 6, as they strive to overturn a one-goal deficit while targeting last season’s title defense.

“The bright side is that we have a return match to play, but it’s not at all an ideal scenario for us. Spurs are a strong team, and they will probably see the return of some key players for the match back,” Slot added.

As Liverpool regrouped after their disappointment, Postecoglou could not hide his pride after his cobbled-together Spurs side held the Premier League leaders to a rare goalless outing.

New arrival Antonin Kinsky impressed on his debut, making a crucial late save to deny Darwin Nunez and secure a significant victory for the hosts, who were missing 10 players, including Rodrigo Bentancur, who was stretchered off after a serious injury to the head.

“I’m very proud of the team. We faced huge challenges tonight. We started the match well, but losing Rodrigo in such a painful way was difficult,” Postecoglou commented, noting that Bentancur was conscious after was taken to hospital for further treatment.

“Despite the challenges, the players have come together remarkably, and I am immensely proud of their efforts. Our recent results have not reflected our hard work, but this victory against a top opponent should bring some well-deserved joy to all those concerned.”
