What will become of Syria? Since seizing Damascus almost without a fight on December 8, Ahmed al-Chareh, leader of the Islamist group Hayat Tharir al-Sham (Editor’s note: HTS, Levant Liberation Organization), has gradually revealed the contours of the Syria which he intends to lead. Thus, the new master of Damascus intends to redefine his relations with Syria and Iran, essential allies of the Bashar al-Assad regime. In an interview given on December 30 to the Al Arabiya television channel, very popular in the Arab world, Ahmed al-Chareh notably affirmed that he did not want Russia to leave Syria, “ not in the way some have presented it anyway “. Likewise for Iran, traditional ally of Baathist Syria, Ahmed al-Chareh had rather temperate words, contenting himself with saying that “ Syria cannot continue without relations with a large country with regional weight like Iran, but these must be done on the basis of respect for the sovereignty of the two countries and without interference ».
A new constitution for Syria
Ahmed al-Chareh, by his former nom de guerre Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, also announced that institutional changes were to be expected. First of all, the new constitution would not be adopted for two or three years, with that of Bashar al-Assad’s regime being suspended. Note that, as a result, Syria, if it has already changed its flag, going from the Ba’athist tricolor of red, white and black to the green, white and black adopted by the 2011 revolution, the name of the country, “Syrian Arab Republic », has not yet been modified, in particular on the official documents issued by the new power.
The work of Parliament and the old constitution being suspended for three months, elections are supposed to take place after this deadline. But the rewriting of the new constitution being postponed until at least
