The Spanish Super Cup tournament continues its evolution in Saudi Arabia, where an additional six-year contract has been signed to guarantee its future until 2030.
An unexpected exile! The Spanish Super Cup, a historic tournament, has found its new home in Saudi Arabia since 2020.
After several editions contested in Spain, the edition of the tournament took a decisive turn, under the leadership of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), then chaired by Luis Rubiales.
The objective was clear: to revitalize a competition increasingly neglected by clubs and revitalize it with global visibility.
The Spanish Super Cup: from the traditional meeting to a real football celebration
The first edition in Saudi Arabia in 2020 marked a breakthrough. Although the pandemic forced the RFEF to move the 2021 edition to the La Cartuja stadium in Seville, the agreement with the Saudi kingdom quickly proved beneficial.
According to ASafter a series of negotiations between several potential host countries, Saudi Arabia won the tender to host the Super Cup, in exchange for substantial financial support and increased exposure for Spanish football.
-The competition has since evolved into a four-team tournament, bringing together the two Copa del Rey finalists and the top two LaLiga clubs.
This format made it possible to modernize a competition often perceived as secondary. From now on, it is no longer a simple meeting between the LaLiga champion and the Copa champion, but a real football celebration, with knockout matches.
In 2022, the agreement with Saudi Arabia for the Super Cup was renewed for a new three-year term (2022-2024), and it was recently extended until 2030.
An additional six-year contract for an annual amount of 30 million euros, according to ASwhich not only guarantees a substantial financial return for the RFEF, but also great exposure for Spanish clubs on the international scene.
