Robbie Keane Takes the Reins as Ferencvaros Coach

Irish football legend Robbie Keane has officially been named the new manager of Ferencvaros, the crowned kings of Hungarian football, as the club announced via its social media channels on Monday.

“We are delighted to announce that Robbie Keane is now the head coach of Ferencvaros,” said the Budapest-based club, underlining their commitment to a bright future.

Keane, who hung up his boots in 2018, has an illustrious playing career which saw him become Ireland’s all-time top scorer. He played a key role in guiding his country to the knockout stages of the 2002 World Cup. During his decorated career, Keane scored an impressive total of 126 goals in 349 Premier League appearances, 91 of which were registered during his time at Tottenham Hotspur. In addition, he played for Coventry City, Leeds United, Liverpool and subsequently shone in Major League with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Following his retirement, Keane transitioned into coaching, first serving as assistant coach to Mick McCarthy with the Ireland national team. He then joined the management ranks at Middlesbrough, working with his former teammate Jonathan Woodgate.

Keane’s coaching journey took a significant turn in 2023 when he got his first head coaching job at Maccabi Tel Aviv. Now, at 44, he enters an exciting new chapter, taking the reins of Ferencvaros – Hungary’s most successful club – following their remarkable triumph in winning the 35th national league title for the 2023/2024 season.
