Canada: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reportedly on the verge of resigning

According to information from the Canadian press, Justin Trudeau could resign from his post as Prime Minister in the coming days.

The leader of the Liberal Party in Canada plans to announce his departure, a few months before the legislative elections which will be held in October.

Lagging behind in the polls over his conservative rival, the head of government is very weakened by almost a decade in power.

He would consider leaving his post. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, under pressure for many weeks, is on the verge of announcing his imminent resignation, the daily reported on Sunday January 5 The Globe and Mail (new window). This could take place as early as Monday, January 6, according to the newspaper which cites three anonymous sources familiar with the internal affairs of the liberal party, and would be made ahead of a national meeting scheduled for Wednesday.

The departure of Justin Trudeau would leave the party without a leader a few months before the next legislative elections which must be held by the end of October. Questioned by AFP, his office refused to comment on this information.

Serious political crisis

So far, the Prime Minister, who had announced his intention to run again, is behind his conservative rival, Pierre Poilievre, by more than 20 points in the polls. A minority in Parliament, weakened by the withdrawal of his left-wing ally and the growing discontent within his own party, he is facing the most serious political crisis since coming to power in November 2015.

Chaos has reigned in Ottawa since the surprise resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, in disagreement with Justin Trudeau over how to manage the looming economic war with the United States. Donald Trump’s statements in recent weeks have in fact aggravated the Canadian political crisis and caused a shock wave. The country is seeking a solution to the threats of the future American president, who has promised to impose 25% customs duties on Canada and Mexico upon his return to power in January.
