La Liga Again Rejects Barcelona’s Request to Register Olmo and Víctor

MADRID (AP) — In a significant setback for FC Barcelona, La Liga and the Spanish Federation have once again rejected the club’s request to officially register Dani Olmo and Víctor for the remainder of the season.

This duo was initially only registered until the end of 2024, as Barcelona failed to comply with the league’s Financial Fair Play regulations within the deadline at the end of the year.

In a joint statement, the league and federation said that although Barcelona eventually managed to comply with salary cap regulations, players cannot be re-registered after being removed due to missing the deadline.

Speaking on Friday, coach Hansi Flick expressed his dissatisfaction with the current situation but expressed confidence in the club’s ability to finalize player registration. His remarks were made just ahead of the team’s Copa del Rey match against fourth division side Barbastro this Saturday.

Barcelona still have the option to seek a legal route to resolve this registration issue, although their previous efforts have failed.

The Catalan club maintains that the deadline for registering new talent should coincide with the closure of the transfer market at the end of January, and not with the current December cut-off imposed by the league.

Recently, Barcelona enjoyed an increase in their salary cap after receiving an impressive €100 million ($103 million) for VIP seats at the newly renovated Camp Nou.

Each La Liga club is assigned a salary cap based on various factors such as income, expenses and debts, typically representing around 70% of the club’s revenue.

The Catalans have faced several obstacles in registering players due to their financial difficulties, leading them to adopt a multitude of financial strategies in recent times, including the sale of future television rights. These financial challenges ultimately led to the departure of club legend Lionel Messi in 2021.
