Alistair Johnston has openly criticized the worrying trend in crowd behavior following his side’s 3-0 defeat to Rangers. After the match, he expressed his disappointment not only with the performance on the field, but also with the unfortunate incident where his teammate Arne Engels was hit by a coin thrown from the stands.
During the post-match interview at Ibrox, Johnston spoke about his experiences in football, recalling places in Central America where fans are known for throwing various objects onto the pitch. Despite this history, he expressed his dismay over the latest incident, noting: “I saw that Engels was hit just above the eye. It’s an unfortunate situation.”
He continued: “We’re just lucky it didn’t hit him directly in the eye…I’ve played other places in Central America where they throw more than coins at you. You you feel pretty safe. It’s unfortunate. Ideally, you don’t want to see anything thrown out on the field. It’s one thing, you know, the words and the chants, whatever. But. yes, you just hope that everyone respects the players on the field, no matter what team they play for.”

Asked by reporters if he noticed any other objects being thrown during the match, Johnston admitted: “No, I didn’t. But again, it’s something that unfortunately happens. And again, in an ideal world this shouldn’t happen It’s unfortunate when it hits someone and look, if it hits them in the eye, it’s probably a pretty serious matter. So everyone be careful.”
He ended his comments with a poignant reminder: “Again, these are human beings out there. He’s somebody’s son. So refrain from throwing things at guys’ heads , ideally.”
