Emotions are running high in the town of Prémesques, in the Lille metropolis, after the death of a man and a woman aged 67 and 68.
The drama took place on rue du Retour, at the couple’s address. The firefighters intervened around 7 p.m., deploying around twenty engines. When they arrived, the house was already completely engulfed in flames. The two sixty-year-olds lived with two of their three children, who were able to get out in time and be taken care of by emergency services.
The town hall declared a danger order to secure the site and prevent any intrusion, while the police opened an investigation to determine the causes of the disaster.
The siblings were taken care of
The Prémesquois couple tragically left behind a family of three adult children. Two of them, who lived in the same accommodation as their parents, were able to receive treatment and psychological support.
The son is said to have injured himself against a window while trying to return inside the burning house to help his parents. He was forced to abandon the rescue due to the violence of the fire. His sister, aged 29, was also evacuated in a state of shock. The third daughter of the siblings, who lives elsewhere, reached the scene after the intervention of the firefighters, and was able to be referred for psychological help.
On Facebook, the city’s mayor, Yvan Hutchinson, assures “full support of the municipality” to the family of the two victims.
The day after the tragedy, a crisis meeting was held at the town hall to study the possibilities of rehousing two children housed on Rue du Retour. Local residents are organizing a clothing drive.
Several neighbors initially thought it was an explosion. They describe a discreet family, yet well integrated in Prémesques. According to one of the residents, the problem is compounded by concern for one of the two girls, who may have a disability. “It’s really painful“, he laments, hoping that the support of the municipality will be long-lasting.
The small town is still in shock. On the initiative of a resident of a neighboring town, a fund was opened to support the siblings and finance the funerals of their two parents.
