Between family reunions to prepare for, winter viruses and weather conditions that discourage travel, this year again blood donations have declined since the start of the Christmas holidays.
At the start of the month, EFS collections were full in the region, but since December 20, attendance has fallen by 12 points in the Alpes-Maritimes and 10 points in the Var.
However, transfusion needs remain just as high for patients, whether they are victims of accidents, suffering from cancer or chronic illnesses. Their health, and sometimes their lives, depend on it.
Hence the call launched, once again, by the French Blood Establishment. It is all the more supported in Paca as our region is not self-sufficient. All year round, on average, one in three blood bags used in our territory comes from another region.
1,000 donations would be needed every day in the Paca and Corsica region, we are not there.
“Carriers of blood group A, B, O, with positive or negative rhesus: all donors are invited to make an appointment”specifies the EFS in a press release. “All blood groups are indeed useful in helping patients waiting for blood products.”
The Donation Centers remain open during the end of the year and holidays. It is easy to make an appointment directly via the EFS website. The site also lists all mobile collections organized with or without appointment. There are some in many municipalities:
Finally, be aware that platelets and plasma can be the subject of specific collections, the EFS also lacks donors.
