Trump wants Greenland and Denmark increases defense spending – Global

Donald Trump has reiterated in recent days that he wants to buy Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory. AND Copenhagen responds by increasing defense spendinglaunching a plan that should be valid 1.5 billion dollarsa record investment for the Nordic country.

Denmark, which controls at least some of Greenland's foreign policywill be able to purchase two ships to monitor the island's coasts, two ultra-modern long-range drones and two dog sled teams. The allocation includes the funds necessary to strengthen the Arctic Command staff in the capital Nuuk and to carry out structural interventions in one of the 3 main airports on the island, which will be able to accommodate F-35 jets.

Denmark believes It is essential to increase its presence in an area where the influence of China and Russia is tangible. At the same time, the island hosts a US military base, the Pituffik Space Base, a key element for the missile defense system and for the management of space missions. Trump is also interested in what's underground: Greenland is rich in natural resources, from oil to neodymium and dysprosium deposits.

The strategic value of the island for Washington has been known for decades. Already after the Second World War, President Harry Truman tried to offer 100 million dollars without success. How much would Greenland cost today if it were put up for sale? According to the Washington Post, 1.7 trillion dollars would be needed in 2019. Today, much more.
