Fight against piracy, the investigators' strategy: bait sites to identify users

Italian football continues its war against digital piracy, which is becoming increasingly sophisticated and also involves the use of bait sites. This is what he reports the Republicwhich explains how investigators have adopted an innovative strategy to identify those who illegally access copyrighted content, such as sporting events or series.

For about a year, law enforcement agencies have put online platforms apparently identical to classic pirate sites, but designed to collect data on users. These portals request personal information such as name, surname and credit card: the aim is to identify those responsible for sharing – even as users – of illicit material and collect illicit evidence. The similarity with real illegal sites makes them particularly effective tools, so much so that hundreds of users have already been identified thanks to this means.

The investigative initiative is part of a broader plan to combat piracy, strongly supported by Dazn and the Lega Serie A, which recently obtained an important victory in court: the Milan court has in fact imposed on the US provider Cloudflare to block access to illegal sites and identify users. According to Serie A estimates, the economic damage caused by piracy to the top league can be estimated at around 300 million euros per year. Furthermore, the first fines against users are expected soon: their amount must be verified, varying according to the law from 154 to 5,000 euros. A higher amount would inevitably have a greater deterrent effect.
