The 4th round of the Cyclocross World Cup took place today in Hulst, Holland. Tomorrow we move to Zonhoven, in neighboring Belgium, for the 5th test.

Niels Vandeputte (Alpecin-Deceuninck) took control of the race early, setting the pace. Toon Aerts (Deschacht-Hens-FSP) crashed in one of the first corners, losing several positions. Vandeputte quickly established a four-second lead over Lars van der Haar (Baloise Trek Lions) and Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal teammates Michael Vanthourenhout and Eli Iserbyt.
Vanthourenhout led the chasing pack on the second lap, but crashed next to Iserbyt on one of the steep descents. Meanwhile, Felipe Orts (Ridley Cycling Team), Pim Ronhaar, Thibau Nys (Baloise Trek Lions) and Emiel Verstrynghe (Crelan-Corendon) returned from the back. The errors continued to pile up for the chasers. Vanthourenhout crashed again on the same descent, as did Van der Haar, Nys and Ronhaar. This only increased Vandeputte's lead, which reached 31 seconds at the halfway point of the race.
Orts and Iserbyt broke away from the chasing group and closed the gap to 24 seconds with three laps remaining. Orts looked comfortable in Hulst, pulling away from Iserbyt and starting a solitary pursuit of Vandeputte. He reduced the gap to 10 seconds, but in the end the Belgian prevailed. Vandeputte survived Orts' attacks and looked poised for victory as he entered the final lap. He ultimately crossed the finish line 9 seconds ahead of Felipe Orts, while Pim Ronhaar overtook Eli Iserbyt to take third place.

Elite donne
As often happens, it was Luxembourger Marie Schreiber who took the lead from the start, followed by her Team SD Worx – Protime teammate Kata Blanka Vas. Lucinda Brand (Baloise Trek Lions) had a bad start, slipping off the pedal and immediately had to fight her way back up the pack. Schreiber set a high pace and after one lap he had built up a lead of 11 seconds.
Zoe Bäckstedt (Canyon//SRAM Racing) positioned herself as the lone pursuer, but the gap continued to grow. At the end of the second lap, she was joined by Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Deceuninck), Annemarie Worst (Cyclocross Reds), Inge van der Heijden (Crelan-Corendon) and Lucinda Brand. At that point, the gap to the leader was already 28 seconds.
Halfway through the race, World Cup leader Brand found her rhythm and pushed the chasing pack forward, gradually chipping away at Marie Schreiber's lead. She left her fellow pursuers behind and did everything she could to close the gap to leader Luxembourg.
With a 16-second difference at the start of the final lap, Schreiber didn't panic. She remained in the lead from the first meter to the finish line, securing her first World Cup victory ahead of Lucinda Brand and Puck Pieterse.
