Morocco wins four prizes at the 2024 CAF Awards

Morocco shone during the prestigious CAF Awards 2024, winning four trophies during the ceremony which was held on Monday, December 16 at the Palais des Congrès in Marrakech, in the presence of numerous personalities from world football.

The Kingdom distinguished itself in several categories: best female referee, best young player, best interclub player and best coach. Lamia BoumehdiMoroccan coach of TP Mazembe (DR Congo) and winner of the CAF Women’s Champions League, was crowned coach of the year for women’s football. Earlier in the evening, her club, TP Mazembe, was voted women’s club of the year.

The Moroccan international Sanaa Mssoudymember of AS FAR, was named best interclub player of the year. For his part, Doha El MadaniAS FAR striker, won the trophy for best young player of the year. Aged 19, she had already distinguished herself by winning the Golden Shoe during the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League, with six goals in five matches.

In the category of referees, Bouchra Karboubi was crowned best female referee of the year. Remember that in 2020, she became the first Arab woman to referee a men’s match. A pioneer in her field, she is also the first African woman to qualify as a video assistant referee (VAR), and was appointed VAR referee during the men’s Africa Cup of Nations final in 2021.

On the male side, Achraf Hakimi and Sofyan Amrabat were selected in the African Team of the Year, alongside other stars such as André Onana, Kalidou Koulibaly, Chancel Mbemba, Yves Bissouma, Franck Kessié, Mohammed Kudus, Mohamed Salah, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.

Achraf Hakimi, centerpiece of the Atlas Lions, played a key role in the historic bronze medal won by the Moroccan Olympic selection during the 2024 Olympics. He also distinguished himself with the national A team during the qualifications for CAN 2025, planned for Morocco. As for Sofyan Amrabat, a true pillar of the midfield, he continued to shine with the national eleven.
