Cloverdale-Langley City: Conservative Tamara Jansen in the lead

CBC/- predicts that Conservative candidate and businesswoman Tamara Jansen will win the federal by-election in the riding of Cloverdale-Langley City, British Columbia.

These elections were triggered when John Aldag, who was a federal MP for the Liberal Party of Canada, announced his resignation last May.

Tamara Jansen previously represented the constituency from 2019 to 2021.

On Monday, she was opposed to Madison Fleischer, the Liberal candidate, and Vanessa Sharma, the NDP candidate. There were also candidates from the Green Party, the People’s Party of Canada and the Libertarian Party.

This is the 11th federal by-election since the 2021 election.

At 11 p.m. (HNP), Tamara Jansen had 8,943 votes (65.5%), compared to the 2,238 votes (16.4%) obtained by Madison Fleisher, her closest rival. One hundred and ten of the 122 polling stations have revealed their results.

The federal riding of Cloverdale-Langley City, without an MP for more than six months, includes part of Surrey, the city of Langley and a portion of the township of Langley, in the suburbs of Vancouver.

Since its creation in 2015, the riding has alternated between the Liberals and the Conservatives.

According to the 2021 census, approximately 130,000 people live in Cloverdale-Langley City and according to Elections Canada, the riding has 92,061 registered voters.

On May 31, Liberal MP John Aldag resigned to try to make the jump to provincial politics by wearing the colors of the New Democratic Party (NPD) in the riding of Langley-Abbotsford.

However, he was defeated by the conservative candidate, Harman Bhangu.

A victory for Poilievre

This Conservative victory comes as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faces the resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and the withdrawal of Housing Minister Sean Fraser.

Earlier in the day, commenting on Chrystia Freeland’s resignation, Conservative Party of Canada Leader Pierre Poilievre said: “Justin Trudeau has lost control, but he is clinging to power. »

He also made an appeal to Jagmeet Singh, the leader of the federal New Democratic Party.

Tamara Jansen will join a caucus led with an iron fist by its leader.
