A magnitude 7.3 earthquake occurred on Tuesday, December 17, off the coast of Vanuatu, in the Pacific, announced the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Witness says he saw dead bodies in capital Port Vila.
The epicenter of the earthquake (initially measured at 7.4 magnitude) was recorded at a depth of 43 kilometers in the sea, just 30 kilometers west of the island nation’s capital. The tsunami alert has been lifted.
In Port Vila, the building housing the American and French embassies was damagedaccording to videos posted online and verified by AFP. The earthquake toppled a concrete pillar, cracked a wall and distorted windows in the building, which also houses the diplomatic representations of other countries, including New Zealand.
