Google named Preeti Lobana as general manager and vice president for its India business, a position that had been vacant since July. Prior to this appointment, Lobana served as vice president of advertising technology at the company and takes over from Sanjay Gupta, who was promoted to president of Asia Pacific earlier this year.
“India’s dynamic digital landscape has always been a source of immense inspiration and innovation for Google,” said Sanjay Gupta. “His leadership and passion for customer satisfaction have driven impactful solutions for businesses across diverse industries.”
This appointment comes at a crucial time for Google in India, one of its major strategic markets. The company has invested billions of dollars to help millions of Indians go online and digitize local businesses. Nonetheless, the tech giant has also faced significant regulatory challenges, including antitrust fines totaling nearly $275 million in recent years.
Lobana, who joined Google in 2016, previously held banking roles at prestigious institutions such as NatWest, American Express and Standard Chartered. Her extensive professional background positions her favorably to navigate India’s complex digital ecosystem.
“This is a unique moment to shape the future with AI, unlocking unprecedented opportunities for businesses to improve productivity,” Lobana wrote in her LinkedIn post. She expressed excitement about the opportunity to drive economic growth and deliver real value addition across India.
Roma Datta Chobey, who acted in this role, will now take over the management of Google’s digital unit in India. Gupta highlighted that Chobey’s expertise in sectors such as e-commerce, fintech, gaming and media would be key to accelerating innovation.
