Brigitte Challande, December 16, 2024. Abu Amir sends the report of this recent initiative which expanded both its scope of intervention and its implementation in the displaced camps.
“Faced with the disastrous humanitarian conditions experienced by displaced families in the camps, the “Bread of Hope” initiative, launched by the UJFP organization last November, appeared to be an important step to alleviate the suffering of these families and respond to their basic needs. This initiative aims to provide bread to families affected by serious food shortages, particularly flour, which has become scarce in local markets due to recurring crises.
As part of the initiative’s activities, portions of bread were distributed last November to displaced families in the Mawasi Khan Younis peasant camp. These efforts have played a crucial role in alleviating the daily burdens families face. This week, the Ibn Sina Center extended the initiative to the Al-Izza camp by installing a tent equipped with clay ovens dedicated to displaced women (video below). For four consecutive days, the women in the camp managed to produce more than 4,000 loaves of bread, which were then distributed to displaced families.
This humanitarian effort comes at a critical time, when thousands of families are suffering from a serious shortage of flour and an unprecedented rise in prices, with a 25 kilo bag of flour reaching a dizzying sum of 250 euros. The lack of bread also led to the closure of most bakeries, triggering what was described as the “hunger revolution”, which saw violent incidents and stampedes among residents seeking bread. bread. Tragically, these events resulted in the deaths of three women and the injury of many others.
The importance of this initiative lies in its role as a model of social and humanitarian solidarity in a context of escalating crises. It not only contributes to the resilience of displaced families and the alleviation of their daily difficulties, but also to the empowerment of women by involving them in the production process, which allows them to play an active role in supporting their community.
As humanitarian conditions continue to deteriorate day by day, initiatives like this are more essential than ever. They not only provide immediate aid, but also a glimmer of hope, assuring displaced families that they are not alone in their difficulties. To ensure the sustainability of these efforts, it is imperative that local and international communities provide broader support, given recurring crises and the soaring cost of living. »
