Imminent start for the rejuvenation of the Lambermont viaduct in Verviers until 2026: what impact for traffic?

The work will aim to provide a real makeover to the structure. Among the planned interventions: replacement of coatings and waterproofing to resolve infiltration problems, repair of the deck slab and concrete elements, installation of new safety barriers, integrating noise barriers on certain sections and the widening of emergency lanes to 3.5 meters compared to the current 2.5. Two 30 meter prestressed concrete beams will be added to support these extensions. The implementation of approximately 18,000 m² of waterproofing and 2 km of new barriers demonstrates the scale of this project, estimated at more than 19.4 million euros excluding VAT.

Impact on traffic?

To limit disruption, the work will be carried out in three main phases, with two lanes maintained in each direction at reduced speed.

Only the preparatory phase, scheduled for mid-January 2025, will result in a temporary reduction to one lane in the direction of Battice. The other phases will last until October 2026.

Preparatory phase – January 2025 On January 11 and 12, 2025, the signage for the preparatory phase will be installed. From January 13, adjustments will be made to the central berm to allow traffic to shift and ensure the best possible mobility during the work. During this period, two lanes will be maintained towards Saint-Vith, diverted onto the emergency lane and the right lane, with a maximum speed limited to 70 km/h. In the direction of Battice, only one lane will be available, also limited to 70 km/h. These adjustments will be spread over a week.

Phase 1 – from January 20 to July 2025 From the end of January 2025, work will focus on the half-deck usually dedicated to traffic towards Battice, near the central berm. Traffic will be reorganized with two lanes maintained in each direction.

Towards Saint-Vith : vehicles will use the emergency lane and the right lane, at a maximum speed of 70 km/h.

Towards Battice : one lane will remain on the usual apron, diverted onto the emergency lane, while the other will be switched in the opposite direction onto the left lane, generally dedicated to the Saint-Vith direction. The speed will be reduced to 50 km/h in this direction.

Phase 2 – from July to December 2025 Work will continue on the same half-deck, but will move to the right lane and the emergency lane. The traffic pattern will be similar to that of the first phase:

Towards Saint-Vith : two lanes, diverted onto the emergency lane and the right lane, limited to 70 km/h.

Towards Battice : one lane on the usual deck, diverted onto the left lane, and one lane switched in the opposite direction onto the left lane in the opposite direction, with a speed limited to 50 km/h. Exit no. 4 “Lambermont” will be inaccessible, a diversion will be put in place via exit no. 3 “Dison”.

Phase 3 – January to October 2026 The work will move to the half-deck dedicated to the tracks towards Saint-Vith. During this period, traffic will be entirely switched to the new renovated deck, usually supporting the tracks towards Battice. Two lanes will be maintained in each direction, at reduced speed.
