French boxer Bruno Surace created a big surprise by winning by knockout against Mexican Jaime Munguia, one of the main challengers in the super-middleweight category and as such largely favorite in this fight, Saturday in Tijuana, Mexico.
The feat of the 26-year-old from Marseillais, rather experienced at middleweight, is all the more remarkable as he moved up a category for this occasion.
It was with a terrible counter, a lightning right hook, at the moment when Munguia made the mistake of lowering his guard after having placed a series of blows, that Surace won in the 6th round. His 26th victory (2 draws) in 28 fights, the 5th only no KO And what a KO!
Few could have predicted such an outcome, especially since the Mexican, former WBO super-welterweight champion, presented himself as challenger N.2 of the WBC, one of the four major international federations with (the WBA, WBO and IBF) among super-middleweights. In addition, he went the distance against megastar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, before losing on points on May 5 in Las Vegas.
He knew how to get up and resist
Aged 28, Munguia, a formidable puncher (44 victories, including 35 before the limit, 2 defeats) also started the strongest, sending several concrete blocks in the face of the Frenchman who even found himself on the mat in the middle of the second recovery.
Compté, the native of Bouc-Bel-Air, north of Marseille, nevertheless knew how to get up and resist until the bell, after a new hail of blows received from his opponent.
The debates then seemed to rebalance, until mid-fight. At which point Munguia once again cornered Surace on the ropes with a new series of punches. But the Mexican’s ultra-aggressive style showed its limits and he paid dearly for his mistake, which was perfectly exploited by the Frenchman, to everyone’s amazement.
This prestigious success will inevitably mark a turning point in the career of Bruno Surace, whose rating should quickly rise in the list of WBC super-middleweight challengers. For the moment, the one who is No.1 is another Frenchman, Christian Mbilli, best placed to challenge the undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez.
