Syria too ‘exhausted’ for conflict with Israel, says rebel coalition leader Jolani

« Israelis have clearly crossed the lines of engagement in Syria, threatening unwarranted escalation in the region »said the leader of the rebels, Abu Mouhammad al-Jolani, on Telegram, Saturday December 14. Israeli troops have occupied the buffer zone of the Golan Heights, located in the south of the country, since the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime on December 8. Like the UN, which deplores a violation of international agreements, the head of the radical Islamist group Hayat Tahir al-Sham denounced this incursion. However, the rebel leader expressed his intention not to engage in a clash with his neighbor.

« Syria’s state of exhaustion after years of war and conflict does not allow entry into new conflicts »assured Jolani, whose real name is Ahmad al-Chareh. Indeed, the Syrian civil war, which began in 2011, devastated the country and left more than half a million dead and more than six million displaced.

Nearly 500 Israeli air raids

Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad, the Hebrew government has carried out numerous air strikes on Syrian soil. Since December 8, 446 air raids have been recorded by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH), including 61 in a few hours, on the evening of Saturday December 14. Israel has indicated that it is targeting Syrian military sites and seeks to completely destroy the tunnels dug under the mountains which house ammunition and ballistic missile warehouses.
