Freshly appointed head of government, François Bayrou is the target of a judicial investigation into the affair of the MoDem European parliamentary assistants.
What fate does justice reserve for the new French Prime Minister? Indeed, François Bayrou has not finished with the affair of the European parliamentary assistants of the MoDem, recalls the Huffington Post. The new Prime Minister must be tried again in this case.
On February 5, the Paris criminal court acquitted the president of MoDem for the benefit of the doubt. Believing that he was guilty, the prosecution, which had requested 30 months of suspended imprisonment, a fine of 70,000 euros and three years of suspended ineligibility for François Bayrou, appealed.
In this case, 11 individuals, including the new tenant of Matignon, were tried in the fall of 2023 in Paris. They are suspected of embezzlement of European funds, used to pay parliamentary assistants who worked for the UDF then the MoDem.
A first for a Prime Minister
Two other defendants, Stéphane Thérou and Pierre-Emmanuel Portheret, were also acquitted. The eight others were sentenced to suspended prison sentences of ten to eighteen months and two years of suspended ineligibility.
François Bayrou's appeal trial has not yet been scheduled. According to BFMTVit will not be able to be held before the summer of 2025. According to the media, the Paris prosecutor's office does not intend to give up this appeal. The hearing could be held at the start of the school year in September 2025, for a duration of approximately six weeks. We would then witness a first for a serving Prime Minister.
