Rwanda wants to organize a Formula 1 Grand Prix. It was President Paul Kagame who officially presented his country’s candidacy on Friday.
On December 13, Kigali hosted the annual general assembly of the International Automobile Federation as well as the FIA awards ceremony.
Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and others, the elite of Formula 1 had therefore met in the Rwandan capital, for the occasion. A first on the continent as the event is 120 years old.
It is difficult for Rwanda to miss such an event without recalling its ”legitimate” ambition: to organize an edition of the Formula 1 Grand Prix. To ”bring back the thrill of motor racing to Africa,” declared Paul Kagame is maneuvering to support his country’s candidacy.
And the calendar seems to be working in his favor. The last edition organized on the continent was in South Africa in…1993. That’s 30 years of empty space.
So ”it is so important that countries from all regions and at all levels have a fair chance to host international sporting events,” recalled the Rwandan president.
Kigali can keep your fingers crossed. Negotiations are underway and the project presented by Rwanda is considered “serious” by the president of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali.
