Israel’s aggression on Golan Heights and buffer zones will not stabilize Syria, Kremlin says

AA / Moscou / Emre Gurkan Abay

“(Israeli) aggression on the Golan Heights and in the buffer zones will not stabilize the situation in Syria,” declared the spokesperson for the Russian Presidency, Dmitry Peskov.

Speaking to journalists this Wednesday in Moscow, Dmitri Peskov discussed the developments in the situation in Syria.

He maintained that Russia provided timely support to Syria and made considerable efforts to this end.

“Unfortunately, the course of events has led to the situation we know today. It is now necessary to proceed on the basis of the facts on the ground,” said the Kremlin spokesperson.

And Dmitri Peskov continued: “The Israeli aggression against the Golan Heights and the buffer zones will not stabilize an already destabilized situation in Syria. We want to stabilize Syria as quickly as possible in order to hope to change the situation in the common sense”.

The Kremlin spokesperson also stressed that Moscow continues to closely monitor developments in the situation in Syria.

“We are of course maintaining contacts with those who currently control the situation in Syria. This is necessary because we have bases and diplomatic missions there,” said the Russian official.

Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime groups took control of Damascus early Sunday, ending the country’s ruling Baath Party since 1963.

Since the fall of the regime, the Israeli military has launched a massive air campaign targeting military sites across Syria, including strikes on the Syrian ports of al-Bayda and Latakia, which destroyed the Syrian navy fleet .

The Israeli military also announced that it had “temporarily” taken control of a demilitarized buffer zone in the Golan Heights, declaring that the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria had “collapsed.”

In addition, Dmitry Peskov stressed that measures will be taken to guarantee Russia’s security interests.

“The special military operation in Ukraine is a top priority for our country and all the objectives of the operation will be achieved,” he said.
