Nantes Métropole lacks swimming pools on its territory. A study by the Nantes region urban planning agency (AURAN) confirmed this a few years ago: in 2017, the surface area of water per 100 inhabitants in the conurbation was less than the national average. And it's even worse in the south of the metropolis, the supply there is half as large.
Vice-president at Nantes Métropole, Ali Rebouh is fully aware of the problem: “In view of the increase in the population in our territory, there are needs for water lines which are extremely important and which must be answered. But a swimming pool is not a gymnasium, it cannot be done in two or three years.”.
Two pools of 25 and 50 meters and 20 water lines in total
Since this study, the community has launched two swimming pool projects. One must see the light of day Bouaye, southwest of Nantes, in 2027 or 2028. The other project is less advanced, but more ambitious, in the Pirmil-Les-Isles district, located in the commune of Rezé. This Olympic swimming pool will include a 50-meter sports pool with ten lanes, equipped with a stands of 750 seatsand another pool, 25 meters long, also with ten water lines.
Clearly, the objective of this Olympic swimming pool is to develop high-level sport. “We can clearly see that we have high-level swimmers in the metropolis, but they do not always have the optimal conditions to be able to practice, because there is extremely strong school demand and also demand from the general public”explains Ali Rebouh.
The swimming pool will open very early in the morning, with slots reserved for these high-level athletes: “The pools will be able to benefit these swimmers. It was important for us to respond to these athletes”continues the vice-president. Schoolchildren are not forgotten since a 60m² paddling pool is also designed to take its first steps in the water.
The opening of this Olympic swimming pool is planned for 2029
This project is also intended exemplary in environmental terms. “We know that a swimming pool consumes a lot of energy, but we minimize the impacts in terms of water and electricity”promises the Nantes elected official. Forecast consumption is estimated for energy (heat and electricity) at 2,200 Kwh/m² of pool per year (excluding paddling pool), when swimming pools consume on average 3,500 Kwh/m², and for water, at less than 90 liters per bather per year. 80% of water will be reused on site.
The cost of this future Olympic swimming pool is set at 52 million euros including tax. And if the construction goes as planned, it will open its doors in the first half of 2029.
