In the news: Jobat surveyed more than 62,000 Belgians for the Salary Compass. And what came out of it? The average monthly salary in our country is 4,318 euros gross.
The average salary gives, it is true, a distorted image of the income of Belgians. People with huge salaries, like CEOs, give this figure a boost. The median salary, that is to say the salary in the middle of a series classified by size, gives a more realistic picture. It amounts to 3,850 euros per month, or 50 euros more compared to 2023.o gross.
Details: There are significant wage gaps between sectors.
People working in the pharmaceutical or chemical sector earn the most money. The average income is 5,247 euros per month. This represents an increase of 13.1% compared to last year.
- People working in the energy and environment sector or in public administration also earn a good living. Average gross salaries in these two sectors amount to 4,820 euros (+10.1% compared to 2023) and 4,784 euros (+17.5% compared to 2023).
- Although salaries in the hotel and catering sector increased from 1.5 to 1.5 million euros, salaries in the tourism sector remained stable.
- The media, marketing and communication and tourism, sport and leisure sectors complete the top three of the lowest paid jobs with average salaries of 3,544 euros (+12.8% compared to 2023) and 3,559 euros (+16% compared to 2023) respectively.
CEOs see pay cut
Note: While almost everyone has seen their salaries increase this year, CEOs are having to settle for less.
Today, CEOs earn on average 5,941 euros gross per month. In 2023, this figure will rise to 6,140 euros. Despite the slight drop in salaries, CEO remains the highest paid profession.
At the very bottom of the list, we find household help, who must make do with an average of 2,765 euros gross per month.

Salaries are highest in Brussels. The average monthly income there is 5,253 euros. The median salary is 4,750 euros.
By comparison, in Flanders, the average monthly salary is 4,225 euros gross and the median salary is 4,750 euros.
There are even notable differences between the Flemish provinces. It is in Flemish Brabant that people earn the most on average (4,452 euros gross) and in West Flanders the least (3,981 euros gross).
Finally, Jobat also looked at the status of employee benefits.
Each employee receives on average 6.5 social benefits. Civil servants receive the most benefits anyway, with an average of 10.1 per employee. Civil servants and workers must be satisfied with 6.4 and 5.7 benefits respectively in their total remuneration.
Meal vouchers remain the most popular: 77% of employees benefit from them. For employees, this figure reaches 80%.
