JSG Helmstedt: An incredible streak ends after 24 victories!

Helmstedt. After a perfect season in the Kreisliga, the U19 footballers of JSG Helmstedt, led by Marc Klinzmann, are once again in the running for the Bezirksliga title.

They are a real unit, a well-established team – and JSG Helmstedt’s A-Juniors proved it once again in the 2024/2025 season. The “Master Express” led by coach Marc Klinzmann, who had clinched the Kreisliga title with a remarkable record of 15 wins in 15 matches and an impressive goal differential of 92:10 the previous season, continued their momentum after his promotion and swept through the Bezirksliga. At least until their penultimate match of 2024…

Incredible 24 consecutive matches had the Helmstedt talents won when they traveled to face the league leaders SV Querum, who were ahead of JSG only due to more matches played. “We didn’t play for two weeks, we were able to train indoors once a week. Querum, on the other hand, was in the rhythm,” said Marc Klinzmann. And it was obvious that his players were struggling with that.

After just 14 minutes the score was already 0:3, and at halftime Helmstedt trailed 0:6. “We were involved in four or five of the goals conceded. I took it with a bit of humor at half-time,” explained the 49-year-old, who has worked with most of his players since their youth level. . “I have had most of the players with me for eleven years,” emphasized Klinzmann, whose team recovered from the 1:6 defeat to Querum with a 3:2 victory over JFV Kickers Braunschweig just three days later . “We also scored the two goals again,” he noted with a smile.

This year, TSV Germania Helmstedt celebrated its 175th anniversary, and the Klinzmann team handed out birthday gifts in spades. Kreisliga champions! Kreispokal winners! Champions of Hallen-Kreismeister! “And then we also played an incredible Bezirksmeisterschaft indoors. It was really great,” emphasized the successful coach. As a Kreisliga team, their boys clashed with the big teams: they were stopped in the semi-final by the future Bezirksmeister, the Niedersachsenliga team SC Göttingen 05, with a 0:2 defeat, ultimately finishing third ahead Niedersachsenliga newcomers MTV Wolfenbüttel.

But what makes this team so strong – aside from the fact that they grew up together? “We have a lot of good footballers and a high level of attendance in training. The boys are ambitious and see success,” says Marc Klinzmann, adding: “It’s really fun to work with them because they learn a lot Also.” And what the former defender greatly appreciates: “I let them play .” Finding creative solutions is close to his heart. “As a coach, I want to develop and refine players,” he declares his mission and looks forward to receiving corresponding praise from other coaches.

“The defensive work starts up front,” emphasizes Klinzmann. And that’s exactly how his team plays, undoubtedly operating as a collective. Or as already mentioned: a real established unit. Until the decisive clash, his team had conceded just six goals in nine matches – a remarkable statistic in a league where an average of 5.4 goals are scored per game.

After their promotion to the Bezirksliga, the Helmstedters started the season without major goals. “We never said we are aiming for first place. We just wanted to see what is possible,” the JSG coach clarified, noting: “And we will sit down again before the second half of the season to see what that we want. I think the boys will say, let’s take a chance, then we want to be first too.” And what about promotion to the Landesliga? “Whether we take the right to promotion remains to be seen.”

The road ahead is still quite rocky for JSG Helmstedt – and for several reasons. “We have many high school students, and the exams are approaching. Some players are taking their sports exams,” reports the 49-year-old technician. “Also, we don’t have the advantage of having an artificial pitch. We will probably have to improvise in training again – like every year,” explains Klinzmann, whose players will play their first match of the 2025 season at BSC Acosta II on February 22.

But first, Helmstedt’s best youth team will head to the arena. On Saturday, February 14, JSG will play a qualifying match over 2 x 20 minutes against the Hallen-Kreismeister, which will be determined this Sunday, aiming to qualify again for the Bezirksmeisterschaften de Futsal. “And in January we also entered another indoor tournament. After that we will start again and prepare for the second half of the season. The aim is to get the boys back in shape by then.
