Accusations are flying, and the truce appears more and more fragile. Israel announced that it had carried out bombings on several dozen Hezbollah targets in Lebanon on Monday, December 2, after mutual accusations of violation of the ceasefire agreement between the two camps.
The Hebrew State “hit Hezbollah terrorists, dozens of launchers and terrorist infrastructure throughout Lebanon”announces the Israeli army in a publication on social networks. She also claims to have hit “the Hezbollah launcher in the Berghoz region, southern Lebanon, shortly after the launch of the two projectiles towards Mount Dov”. The strikes left at least nine dead and three injured, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
A few hours earlier, Hezbollah had claimed responsibility, for the first time since the ceasefire agreement with Israel, for an attack on an Israeli military position, on “the occupied hills of Kfar Chouba”. This area of the Golan Heights, Syrian territory occupied by Israel, borders Lebanon, which also claims it. Benyamin Netanyahu described this action as “grave violation” of the agreement, to which “Israel will react with force”according to a press release from the Prime Minister's office. According to Israel, there were no injuries.
The Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, an ally of Hezbollah, earlier in the afternoon accused Israel of “violation flagrante” ceasefire with the pro-Iranian movement “at least 54 times” since November 27. He called on the committee overseeing the truce, which includes the United States and France, “to urgently take action and force Israel to stop its violations and withdraw” of Lebanese territory.
Lebanese territory has been bombed several times by Israel since the ceasefire came into force. On Monday, an Israeli drone targeted a Lebanese army post in Hermel, a region of the Bekaa plain in eastern Lebanon, far from the border with Israel, injuring one soldier. The Israeli army says it targeted “d“terrorist infrastructure sites used for arms smuggling”and declares “investigate” on the circumstances in which the Lebanese soldier was injured.
A man was also killed by an Israeli drone strike on the village of Marjeyoun, near the border in southern Lebanon, the Lebanese Health Ministry said. The Israeli army claimed to have “targeted military vehicles operating in the area of a Hezbollah missile manufacturing site.”
The head of French diplomacy, Jean-Noël Barrot, insisted Monday to his Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar on “the need for all parties to respect the ceasefire in Lebanon”according to a press release from his ministry. For his part, Gideon Saar rejected these accusations. “We are hearing that Israel is violating the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon. On the contrary, Israel enforces it.”he said in a press release.
