The Golden Star for half a century of cinema

The Marrakech Convention Center was decked out in its finest attire to host a historic moment: a vibrant tribute to David Cronenberg, one of the most influential directors in world cinema. On the occasion of the 21st edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival (FIFM), the Canadian filmmaker received the Gold Star, a prestigious distinction which recognizes a career spanning nearly five decades.

Considered the “ Godfather of body horror“, David Cronenberg has captivated generations of moviegoers with his bold exploration of bodily transformations and the limits of the human psyche. The beautiful Diane Kruger had the honor of presenting him with this award, to the loud applause of a delighted audience. The atmosphere in the room, packed for the occasion, was marked by respect and admiration.

David Cronenberg, director and screenwriter, established himself as an essential figure from his beginnings in underground cinema. With works such as La mouche, Crash, Spider, A History of Violence, Cosmopolis or even Crimes of the Futurehe marked the history of the seventh art with his audacity and his singularity.

His films have been regularly selected at the biggest international festivals, including , where he won the Special Jury Prize for Crash. His work has also been recognized with prestigious awards, such as the Golden Coach at Cannes in 2006, the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival in 2018, and recently, the Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award from the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024.

During his speech this evening at the Palais des Congrès in Marrakech, David Cronenberg expressed deep gratitude to the festival and its organizers. “ I've been hearing for years that the Marrakech Film Festival is wonderful. And now, the stars have finally aligned, I am here in Marrakech, not only to experience the festival, but to receive the Golden Star, this prestigious award that crowns my half-century of work. What a pleasure and what an honor “, he declared, visibly moved.

The director did not fail to salute the hospitality of Morocco and its hosts. “ For the magnificent hospitality of this country, I must thank King Mohammed VI and Prince Moulay Rachid ».

Cronenberg also noted the privilege of being among previous Gold Star recipients. “ The list of everyone who has received this award before me is absolutely fabulous. It is for me a great honor and a great pride to be part of those who, through their cinematographic art, have tried to give meaning to this world and to our mutually dependent existences. “, he confided.
