Working as a psychiatric nurse is much more than just a job: it is a vocation, and sometimes a real challenge. Between supporting patients with mental disorders, supporting families, and managing emotional emergencies, this job requires both technical skills and empathy.
Is the remuneration commensurate with the skills and efforts required by this profession? The information site Nurses published a report in which five nurses working in different fields share and comment on their pay slips. Among them there is Laurence, a psychiatric nurse in an outpatient crisis system for children and adolescents in Essonne.
“My salary is not up to par”
Aged 57 and graduated in 1991, Laurence is four years away from early retirement. Currently stationed at Barthélemy hospital, in Essonne, she is on the ninth level. His pay slip amounts to 3,204 euros gross, or 2,755 euros net. A figure too low, according to the professional.
« Finally at the end of my career, after 36 years of full-time activity, I found that my salary was not up to par. I work with suicidal adolescents, in a context of shortage of doctors. If we take into account the difficult working conditions and the responsibility involved in the exercise, the salary remains low “, she explains.
The Ségur bonus, arriving too late
After the Covid crisis, as part of the Ségur de la Santé agreements, an increase of 183 euros net per month was granted to 1.5 million professionals in health establishments and EHPADs from 2021. Laurence was able to benefit from this bonus. However, she regrets action that was a little too late: “ The Ségur bonus corresponded to a revaluation but it came very late”.
The site Nurses confirms this feeling: For those who were able to receive it, the Ségur bonus represented progress, but the salaries remain unattractive given the responsibilities and workload. »
