Germany: Maximum Security Around the Planned Match Between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Alba Berlin

A few hours before the basketball match between Alba Berlin and Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Euroleague, the German capital is deploying an unprecedented security system. This meeting comes in a tense context, three weeks after the incidents which followed the Israeli team's football match in Amsterdam.

An impressive contingent of 1,500 police officers has been mobilized around the Ober Arena where the meeting is to take place. Security measures include the complete closure of the perimeter around the stadium and the Israeli players' hotel since Wednesday. Residents of the area must also show their identification papers to access their homes, and all parking has been prohibited in the area.

The Berlin authorities, determined to avoid any overflow, have also taken targeted preventive measures. Prohibitions on gatherings were issued to several pro-Palestinian activists previously involved in unrest.

“Our top priority is to ensure safety at all times,” says the Berlin police spokesperson. “Our teams, massively deployed in and around the sports venue, are ready to face any eventuality.”

These exceptional provisions will remain in force until Friday morning, demonstrating the desire of the German authorities to guarantee the smooth running of the event.
