A former Liga 1 coach takes the reins of the ‘Bicolores’?

The 52-year-old Peruvian strategist returns to lead the ‘Blanquirroja’.

A familiar face returns to the Peruvian Federation. Carlos Silvestri, who most recently managed Comerciantes Unidos in the 2024 Liga 1 season, is set to take charge of the Peru U-17 national team. This information was confirmed by journalist Horacio Zimmerman via his account on the social network “X”.

According to Zimmerman, Silvestri will replace Pablo Zegarra, who has been in charge of the U-17s in recent months. The move marks Silvestri’s return to the youth categories of the national team, where he already has experience, having led the U-17s during the 2019 Sudamericano held in Lima.

During the 2019 U-17 Sudamericano, the Peruvian team, under the leadership of Silvestri, was close to qualifying for the World Cup. Although this objective was not achieved, this tournament made it possible to discover players who are now leaving their mark in both national and international football. Notable names in this team include Yuriel Celi, Carlos Montoya, Nicolás Figueroa, Oscar Pinto and Joao Grimaldo, the star player currently playing for Partizan in Serbia.

Carlos Silvestri arrives at the FPF after spending two years at the head of Comerciantes Unidos. In 2023, he won promotion to Liga 1 by winning the Liga 2 title with the Cutervo-based club. However, his performance in the 2024 season was more low-key, and after his contract ended, he opted not to continue with the team.

NOTE: Peru’s U-17 national team was previously managed by Pablo Zegarra, who completed a friend series and tour to Japan, where the team faced the United States and host nation Japan. Additionally, a standout player on this U-17 team with Peruvian roots is Paolo Doneda, a goalkeeper playing for AC Milan in Italy. Another member is Nicolás Cairo, who plays for Sassuolo in Italy.
